about

“An artist you should know about” – LAUREN LAVERNE (BBC 6MUSIC)

“Sounding really, really nice” – JOHN KENNEDY (RADIO X)

“Socio-political commentary wrapped up in a sweet, sweet tune” – MELITA DENNETT (BBC INTRODUCING)

“I Believe” is the next new single to be unveiled from Frankie Knight’s debut solo album, ‘Blue Marble’, which follows on 4th October via MIOHMI records. This is the latest in a flurry of highly praised tracks including the reflective, sundown-tinted “Tijuana” which has been gaining support from Lauren Laverne (BBC 6Music), John Kennedy (Radio X) and BBC Introducing.

Mining sonic influences from the nostalgic to the cutting edge – including UK garage, grime, and the experimental pop of FKA Twigs – “I Believe” incorporates glitchy drum patterns, rolling hi-hat loops and pounding 808 bass hits that come together to complement the movement of a familiar but unpredictable bassline. The darkness and depth of this bittersweet track reflect the lyrics, which are a rallying cry of support for those suffering from depression and self-doubt, in particular artists who struggle with the idea of success (something that Knight sees often in her work as a higher education teacher).

Thought-provoking and conscious, yet soothing and dreamlike, the ‘Blue Marble’ album is named after the famous image of Earth taken by Apollo 17, and it brings a collection of tracks all inspired and held together by the theme of unity.

Knight explains: “I remember once hearing Kate Tempest say that when writing about politics, the message is more interesting and accessible when you make the link to interpersonal relationships at home. This thought stayed with me. I have explored how the ways we act in our everyday lives impact and resound with the wider world. I write music to soothe the problems I face and try and use the process to find a positive. Referencing the Blue Marble image was a way of representing that need to step back and reflect, looking at different perspectives. It’s a strange comfort when you look at pictures of the Earth from space.”

Self-produced by Knight and her oldest friend, Rob Swaine, the new material combines her organic approach to songwriting and soundscape-building with Swaine’s beat production skills refined through years of DJing, along with their shared love for Ibiza chillout. The pair grew up in South West London, bonding over a love for music including Portishead, Massive Attack, Lamb, Simian Mobile Disco, Major Lazer, Little Dragon, Zero 7, RJD2 and Noisia. Both having now migrated to the South Coast, on this album they fuse bass music undertones and pop sensibilities, and instruments picked up on travels all over the world, with an elegant, meditative sense of introspection and simplicity that reflects their escape from urban life.

A hugely engaging performer, with her live band Frankie Knight has played a slew of headlines as well as support for Young Fathers, Anchorsong and Kosheen. She is also a member of Yumi And The Weather’s live set-up, lending her talents on keys, synths and backing vocals, not to mention a strong line in dance moves. Steadily building her solo career, Knight has gained support for previous releases from the likes of Tom Ravenscroft, Steve Lamacq, John Kennedy and BBC Introducing. This adds to her previous role in BBC Introducing-championed electro pop band Arp Attack. Now pouring her energies into her own project, this multi-talented creator makes all her own artwork and videos, her strong artistic vision running through each aspect for an inviting and absorbing experience.
